COSTEP Massachusetts

In the fall of 2006, the NEDCC received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create a process for developing a statewide disaster preparedness plan for cultural resources.  Part of the plan was to develop a framework and then to test it using the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Massachusetts Archives as the lead agencies, since they have contacts with most of the cultural institutions in the Commonwealth.

The pilot project began with the organization of an initial meeting on March 21, 2008 at the Massachusetts Archives to launch the project.  Invitees included representatives from numerous state agencies, from museums, libraries, historical societies, and from the emergency management community.  This meeting served as much as an opportunity for the participants to be introduced to each other as we as to learn about the project.  Future meetings will continue the process with the appropriate organizations and agencies.
